Leaving On A Jet Plane

It seemed like a cruel joke.
He stepped slowly, deliberately into the airport lounge.
They had only known each other for half a year.
And now they have to part.
She, to a far away place, he, stuck here.
This would be their final meeting, his final chance to say what he always wanted to say to her.
She was there, surrounded by all her friends, male and female.
Some of them were crying openly, some of them fought back their tears.
She comforted the sobbing ones, accepted their farewell presents, spoke to everyone kind enough to send her off.
He just stood there, waiting.
Slowly, the swarm of people around her disengaged, and he moved hesitantly to her.
She only noticed him when he was right in front of her.
He smiled, not the warm smile he usually wore, rather a smile of great melancholy.
He placed the gift into her hands, and closed her fingers over it.
The last time he will hold her hands again.
He stared into those eyes of hers.
“I have so much to tell you, so much, far too much…”
She smiled as well.
“Thanks for the memories.”
He really wanted to blurt it all out, his feelings for her, his emotions, his desire for her to stay with him and not leave.
But he knew that was selfish.
He knew that once he leaves now, he would never see her again.
He placed his hand on her shoulder.
“Take care.”
Then he turned away, walking out of the lounge, not once did he turn back to look.
He never got to say the words he wanted to say.
Instead, he said the hardest word to say.
“Goodbye.”

Yeah. Something I never want to go through happened to one of my friends. Take care.
